Notice on Launching the 2018 Popular Science Writing -Young Science Writers Hunting Project

Dear young enthusiasts of popular science and science fiction writing,

In order to prompt the public to attach importance to and engage in popular science writing and cultivate the reserve talents for prospering and developing popular science writing, China Science Writers Association (CSWA) will continue to undertake the Popular Science Writing Project under Popular Science Information Construction Project of China Association for Science and Technology in 2018, and organize the implementation of the 2018 Popular Science Writing - Young Science Writers Hunting Project.

The activity in 2018 represents the continuation of the 2017 Popular Science Writing - Young Science Writers Hunting Project. The project will, by continuing to adhere to the purpose of “supporting original popular science and science fiction works, cultivating talents on scientific and cultural undertaking, and promoting prosperity and development of popular science writing”, recruit potential young popular science writers nationwide. Pursuant to the project, training and guidance on popular science and science fiction writing will be launched focusing on topics that meet the needs of the public, with the aim of guiding and supporting young popular science and science fiction writers in writing, and training on commenting popular science and science fiction works will also be initiated to support young individuals in commentary writing.

Meanwhile, the 2018 Popular Science Writing - Young Science Writers Hunting Project will be open to contribution of popular science and science fiction works from young individuals nationwide, and finally a total of 55 winning works will be selected and the authors of these works will be awarded the title of Young Star Science Writer.

During the activity, the project will be promoted and the works will be provided through the columns in the official website of China Science Communication and the official logo and public account of the activity, in a bid for wide dissemination on both online and offline platforms. The relevant matters are hereby notified as follows:

3, Content and progress of the activity

(1) Call for topics (May, 2018)
In mid-May, the call for topics of the 2018 popular science writing activity was issued to the public, with a period of not less than one week. Prior to May 30, a total of 50 topics were selected based on opinions of the public and experts, and disclosed to the public.

(2) Selection and training of writing talents and creation of works (June - October, 2018)

Preliminary training on popular science and science fiction will be available to not less than 850 to 900 young writers aged 18 to 40 years, with a focus on the 50 topics, a total of 100 to 150 potential young writers aged 18 to 40 years will be selected for advanced training on popular science and science fiction, and 2 training sessions on commenting popular science will also be launched. All types of trainees will be selected nationwide, and register online and subject to selection for training, with the notice to be issued prior to the activity. Trainees for advanced training courses shall have good foundations and experience, as well as experiences of publishing popular science and science fiction works or concepts of mature creations; trainees for primary training courses and popular science commentaries shall develop certain understanding and interests in popular science and science fiction.

(3)Solicitation and evaluation of popular science and science fiction works

We would like to solicit contribution from young enthusiasts of popular science and science fiction writing (including writers who have attended training courses), which shall subsequently be evaluated by expert judges. And finally, a total of 55 winning works shall be selected, and authors of these works shall be awarded the title of Young Star Science Writer.

(4) Project promotion and dissemination The project will be promoted and the works will be provided through the columns in the official website of China Science Communication and the official logo and public account of the activity, in a bid for wide dissemination on both online and offline platforms.

4, Requirements on popular science and science fiction works

(1) Eligibles

Young Chinese popular science and science fiction writers 18 to 40 years of age with no restrictions on their domiciles.

(2) Time period for solicitation June 10, 2018 to October 10, 2018

(3) Requirements on contributions

1. The scope of the manuscript can cover such areas as scientific fairy tales, scientific essays, scientific stories, scientific essays and science fiction, with 1500 to 5000 characters.

2. The contributions should be original popular science and science fiction works with clear themes which shall be highly scientific, ideological and artistic.

1) The manuscripts shall be clear in themes and written while taking into account the following 50 topics (which have been subject to public solicitation and experts selection)

Prevention and mitigation of disasters, urban planning and smart cities, mental health, AI, genetically modified techniques, paleontology, aeronautics and space, black holes, dark matter and dark energy, quantum techniques, marine life, cosmic and planetary explorations, stealth techniques, virtual and augmented reality, new energy and materials, deep sea explorations, food safety, robotics, public safety, big data, biodiversity and ecosystem, water and soil resources and environmental protection, disruptive technologies, advanced weaponry, green life, climate and environment, self-help and mutual help, polar regions and Tibetan Plateau, drones, infectious diseases, Science & Technology and society, cutting-edge medicine, aircraft carriers, safety production, information security, science education and communication, safe medication, smart medicine, mineral resources, nuclear energy, medical ethics, remote sensing, modern agriculture, block chains, core technologies of hardware and software, next-generation communication technologies, large scientific devices, modern transportation, brain science, and reproductive health.

2) Scientific aspects: The manuscripts shall be in align with the requirements on popularizing scientific and technological knowledge, advocating scientific approaches, disseminating scientific thoughts and carrying forward the spirit of science; they shall be conducive to enlightening wisdom and inspiring individuals to love, learn and apply science.

3) Ideological aspects: The theme thoughts and content of the manuscripts shall be healthy and upward, reflect the main themes of the times and represent the direction of development of advanced culture.

4) Artistic aspects: The manuscripts shall be novel in overall concept, original in writing techniques and expression forms, and vivid, fluent, distinctive and infectious in wording; they shall attach importance to the combination of natural science and humanity, and exhibit high cultural tastes.

3. The works shall be completely original, and to date, the authors have not transferred the copyrights and the rights of adaptation and development to third parties.

4. The act of contributing shall be deemed a consent that the host has the right to disseminate the works, including the right to grant the organizer, co-organizer and cooperative media (paper, website, or public account), etc. to publish the manuscripts in full or their excerpts without paying fees.

5. Authors shall submit their manuscripts on real-name basis (pen name is allowed, while personal information required shall be real-name information). The act of contributing shall be deemed a consent that the host can publish the manuscripts in full for online and offline non-commercial publicity, and that anonymous or public comments by judges can be published.

6. Among the copyrights of the 55 outstanding popular science and science fiction works, only the personal right shall be granted, and China Association for Science and Technology enjoys the property right of the works; such third-party self media as China Science Communication, and Service Cloud, APP, Official Weibo and WeChat public account of China Science Communication shall have the right to forward these works. Pursuant to this project, a contribution fee of not less than 200 RMB per 1000 characters shall be paid to authors of these works, nor shall fees be paid to works if they are published in Science Writing or in book collections and for exhibition.

7. Each author shall be allowed to submit one popular science work and one science fiction work, and for trainees who have attended advanced training courses, the number shall be two, respectively.

(4) Rules for evaluations

1. A total of 80 points shall be assigned to the thematic, scientific, ideological and artistic aspects of the works. A total of 5 judges shall provide their comprehensive marks based on the above requirements, with the average as the final scores for the works.

2.2.A total of 20 points shall be assigned to Internet popularity of the works, with 10 points to the total number of views on the official website and to that of votes on WeChat when the deadline of contributing has reached, respectively. The above two items shall be calculated separately. The first to the fifth places and sixth to the tenth placed shall be given 10 and 9.9 points, respectively, with a decrease of 0.1 point. No differentiation shall be made between popular science and science fiction when publishing the ranking of views on the official website and votes on WeChat. This shall last from the date of contributing to 6 days after the deadline of contributing.

* The above rules shall apply to the evaluation of all works. The evaluation shall be performed by means of random + designated judges, to ensure that each manuscript is marked and commented by not less than three judges.

(5) Rewards for selectees

1. The 55 selected works will be rewarded with 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes, with 3000 RMB for each of the 10 1st prize winners, 2,000 RMB for each of the 15 2nd prize winners, and 1000 RMB for each of the 30 3rd prize winners (Pre-tax).

2. The Monthly Popularity Award is established to reward the top 12 popular works with higher monthly popularity (6 popular science works and 6 science fiction works, respectively), with 800 RMB for each of the 2 1st prize winners, 500 RMB for each of the 4 2nd prize winners, and 200 RMB for each of the 6 3rd prize winners. Popular science works and science fiction works shall be rewarded separately, with the proportion of online voting accounting for 100%. The results shall be announced on July 10, August 10, September 10 and October 10, respectively.

3. Free training and full-course writing guidance by experts shall be available for trainees for advanced training courses in Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Wuhan and Changchun.

4. For mature works submitted on the website of the activity, the authors shall be given the opportunity to receive comments from and interact with popular science and science fiction writers.

5. The works will have the opportunity to be published in the relevant platforms of China Science Communication and CSWA, including Science Writing, publications of China Children’s Press and Publications Group, China Science Writers Network, and the public account of CSWA.

6. Authors of the 55 selected works shall be awarded the certificates issued by CSWA, and have the opportunity to be evaluated for the Award of CSWA for Outstanding Science Works.

7. Authors of the 55 selected works shall have the opportunity to attend the 2018 Annual Meeting of CSWA.

8. Outstanding authors shall have the opportunity to apply for membership in CSWA and its local branches.

9. Outstanding authors shall have the opportunity to go to CSWA, Guokr, QingMe and related units for internships.

5. Participation

Participants can learn more about the activity, register, submit works, attend online and offline training courses and engage in exchanges, etc. through the official website of CSWA (www.kpcswa.org.cn) and China Science Communication as well as their China Mobile APPs.
